Chapter 17

Clary bounded from her chair, every nerve on alert. The two fae who’d chased her before pushed through the door without a word. She recognized the one she’d hit because of his swollen nose and black eyes. This time, though, he had an automatic rifle slung over his shoulder. Apparently, they thought her worthy of bigger firepower. Clary felt a crazy twinge of satisfaction, but it was short-lived. The moment the fae were in the room, two more crowded in behind them, forming a deadly wall between her and the door. The last fae to enter closed what was left of the door and locked it.

The stone knife sat next to the laptop. She’d been using it to open boxes, but now she snatched it up. It wouldn’t stop bullets, but it was all she had.

There was an instant of perfect quiet in the room. She was dimly aware of a chorus of voices in the hallway outside—evidence that the smashed door and parade of fae had attracted attention. The supernatural world was supposed to stay out of the public eye, but clearly that didn’t matter to this bunch.

“What do you want?” she demanded.

By way of reply, the bruised fae raised his rifle. Clary’s face went numb with panic, the rest of her body prickling as if she’d touched a live wire. She wasn’t sure how much was adrenaline and how much was Vivian’s rising magic.

He squeezed the trigger. Clary jerked aside, the bullet a hot kiss beside her ear. Her breath deserted her. A witch’s reflexes were fast, but Vivian’s were faster, and suddenly she was moving too quickly to think. She shrieked in pain as a fireball left her hand. There would surely be blisters if she lived long enough to burn.

The fae scattered as her attack slammed into the wall, leaving a scorch mark on the bland wallpaper. It gave Clary seconds to slash at a fae, but he ducked, sweeping low with one foot and knocking her down. Clary’s knife spun out of reach under the queen-size bed. His second blow hit her hard enough that the room reeled.

In a second he was on her, one hand at her throat while he fumbled for the rifle. She was at a bad angle to fight back, her only defense to claw at his face with her already burned left hand. The fae’s head jerked back, keeping just out of reach, but Clary grabbed the front of his coat, pulling him down. He pulled away, but not before she grabbed his jaw. The moment her fingers touched his face, Vivian released another blast of power. Clary swore with pain as the fae flew backward. He hit the ground, but didn’t move again.

The other fae rushed in as she dived behind the desk. A rush of mad, protective anger flooded her at the thought of all her beautiful new equipment being shot to smithereens. She grabbed the folding luggage rack and hurled it. The gesture forced her to stand, which was a mistake.
